Students are directly taught each language skill and given many opportunities for guided, collaborative, and independent deliberate practice. Teachers provide modeling of each skill and in-the-moment feedback. It is not assumed that students will naturally deduce these concepts on their own.

Explicit instruction has a substantial impact, proven to “benefit all learners– but particularly those who find learning to read more difficult” (Vaughn & Fletcher, 2021):

• The Council for Exceptional Children deemed explicit instruction a high-leverage practice (McLeskey et al., 2017).
• Through explicit phonics instruction, children learn to read more efficiently.
• Explicit instruction in comprehension strategies greatly enhances understanding. 
• Explicit instruction improves students’ performance on critical thinking tasks.
